Against Cheap Grace in a World Come of Age: An Intellectual Biography of Clayton Powell, 1865-1953 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Studies in Religion, Culture, and Social dEvelopment, Vol. 9)
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (05 September, 2002)

The Conversion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Ralph Clingan's book illuminates important dimensions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's conversion, which he attributed to the six months he attended Clayton Powell's Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. This is the most important theological work of the past fifty years. I based my Reformation Day Sermon on the book. It reads like a conversation, very readable, if compressed. I want to see more detailed treatments of some of Powell's sources than allowed in this small volume.

Aime Cesaire: The Collected Poetry
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (October, 1983)
Authors: Aime Cesaire, Clayton Eshleman, and Annette Gail Smith
Average review score:

Shining star of surrealism and negritude
First of all this book itself is beautifully designed and oversized, containing selections from five of Cesaire's published books of poety, separated by prints by Wilfredo Lam.
This poetry of Cesaire requires an extensive introduction since it is filled with both politicsl and surrealistic elements. The editor provide a 30 page introduction which was very helpful.
I found that I needed to read these poems outloud in order to fully understand them. I wish that I could also read the French originals that we provided. Of course every great poet writes many poems that do no quite reach his general level of excellence and Cesaire is no exception, but I found many poems to treasure which will remain with me a long while. They make heavy use of Martiniquan flora and fauna, but every poem is about meaninful ways of acheiving power for the Black diaspora which was the heart of Cesaire's negritude
These poems belong in the collection of all who care about poetry.

Alexander Fox and the Amazing Mind Reader
Published in Paperback by Prometheus Books (July, 1998)
Authors: John C. Clayton and Emily Egan
Average review score:

An introduction to critical thinking for people of ALL ages.
When Arcady Mystikos comes to town, everyone is bowled over by his psychic powers -- except for 6th grader Alexander Fox.

Fox asks legitimate questions and looks for a more practical explanation of Arcady's feats.

This book is an outstanding introduction to using one's brain.

I am buying additional copies to send to my friends who follow and believe in the popular "psychics" of our day. Mr. Mystikos's name could very easily be replaced with any of those psychic's names.

The Avenue, Clayton City
Published in Paperback by Duke Univ Pr (Trd) (April, 1996)
Author: C. Eric Lincoln
Average review score:

Excellent
Read this book almosts a decade ago, and still remember it vividly. Life in a small and very emphatically segregated Southern town just before WW II (but it might as well be 1890). C. Eric Lincoln is an academic type, and his knowledge of Black history informs the book without turning into a textbook.

An engrossing tale of addiction
This was the first book I read by Clayton and I have been addicted ever since. An in depth look at addiction with lots of twists and turns. It really keeps your interest and is an excellent read if you can find this work. One of my favorites.

Barns, Sheds, & Outbuildings: Complete How to Information & Design Concepts for Ten Buildings
Published in Paperback by Creative Homeowner Press (April, 2002)
Authors: John D. Wagner and Clayton Dekorne
Average review score:

A superb, well-illustrated, well-written book
This book isn't just about barns and shed; it's about proper building and framing practices for any type building. Sure, you can use what you learn here to build barns and shed-- and there are very complete plans for some lovely projects in the back of the book-- but you could just as easily use this book as a guide to building an addition on your house, or for framing a roof. The illustrations are fantastic; clear, concise, with good captions. The writing overall is very clear and understandable. I recommend this book highly to anyone doing any type of building.

Big Man and the Burn-Out
Published in School & Library Binding by Houghton Mifflin Co (Juv) (October, 1985)
Author: Clayton Bess
Average review score:

Amusing
The gander was one of my favorite characters, but I also liked the way the Jess turns Meetchum, a never-do-well, around in his classes. It was a clever parallel of Jess and his goose, its mother, and his grandmother Hannah, all striving to co-exist. The sequel to this book, "The Mayday Rampage" is written in an entirely different style, but has the same characters of Jess, Molly, Meetchum, Mr.Goodban the teacher and his lover Vic. The magic moment between Jess and Meetchum never repeats, but their friendship has consequences not seen until the next book.
